Get out your dancing shoes and clear off your calendar! Saturday, July 25 is National Dance Day, which means a day of moving, grooving and exercise! National Dance Day was created back in 2010 by Nigel Lythgoe of “So You Think You Can Dance” as a way to promote dancing as a fun, expressive way to stay fit and be social.
Lythgoe is also the co-creator of the Dizzy Feet Foundation, which promotes dance throughout the nation through various events, fundraising and community programs. The website features instructional videos for beginner and advanced dance routines, taught by stars from “So You Think You Can Dance.” The dance routines are set to the hit song “Shut Up and Dance” by rising artists WALK THE MOON.
Last year, National Dance Day events were held in Grand Park of Los Angeles, Jacksonville Landing in Jacksonville, Florida, and even The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. Cities and small towns across the countries got to celebrate the day thanks to local dance studios and gyms that held their own events.
Fred Astaire Dance Studios around the country also participated in National Dance Day events in 2014. Fred Astaire Dance Studio of Greensboro hosted the Boys & Girls Club members participating in the Captain Green Eyes Dance Troupe’s summer dance camp. Watch the video here.
In Cary, NC, Fred Astaire Dance Studio hosted a free dance party as students told stories of weight loss success thanks to ballroom dancing.
