The Swing of Things: Boogie Down Edition

Winter Blues

What do a yodeling cowboy, a top-rated video game, dancing cows, and an all-nighter in a nearly deserted airport all have in common? They’re all viral video hits and highlight the creativity and joy that song and dance bring out in people. Let’s get started!

From Walmart to the Grand Ole Opry

You’d have to be hiding out to miss the viral video of 11-year-old Mason Ramsey. He’s the little boy that started a sensation by yodeling the Hank Williams song “Lovesick Blues” in the aisles of his local Walmart. After talk show queen Ellen DeGeneres saw him, she invited him on the show to perform and made the big announcement: a performance at Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry.

Holy Cow! Bust a Mooove

We travel to the piney woods of East Texas for our next video. The Bobcat Belles dance team represents Hallsville High School in Hallsville, Texas. The town might be tiny, but they blew up big when a video of their dancing Chick-fil-A cows routine hit social media. The team was performing at ShowTime International’s Regional Contest in Lewisville, Texas.

Missed My Flight so I Danced All Night…Long

When someone misses a late night connecting flight, shooting a happy dance video is not the usual response! Mahshid Mazooji calls herself a “dancing machine with a positive spirit” and she proves it with this video she created while she waited. Mazooji says she made a lot of great friends that night as they danced their troubles away and danced everywhere except… on the ceiling! By the way, singer Lionel Richie saw her video and invited her to meet him at a concert in Las Vegas.

Boogie Down Challenge

Fox News is calling the video game “Fortnite” a “cultural touchstone.” A staggering 45-million players have signed on to play the free online game, according to developer Epic Games. Maybe one of the reasons it’s so popular is because it doesn’t take itself too seriously, including avatar “happy dances” with the click of a button. Now the game is taking those dances to a new level. They put out a challenge to users to record themselves doing a dance. They’ll pick 100 winners who will have their dances included into the game. YouTube is full of submission videos and they run the gamut from creative to crazy! Check it out if you have a few spare minutes… or hours!
